2017 JGP Poland Dance Preview

Three teams have already secured their spot in the Final with Carreira and Ponomarenko earning 30 points and Shevchenko/Eremenko and Lajoie/Lagha scoring 28.  Konkina and Yakushev have 24 points and will have to see how the next two weekends play out to know if they will make the Final.

Skoptcova and Aleshin won a silver medal at JGP Belarus.  They earned a Level 4 only on their lift in the short dance, with Level 3s on both segments of the Cha Cha.  They had all positive GOES, netting them 5 points and their program components were in the mid to high 7s.  Their free dance earned Level 4 on the lifts and spin with Level 3 on their twizzles.  They again earned all positive GOEs, earning 9 points and had program components in the 7s.  Their GOEs and program components are some of the strongest this season, but their levels are costing them lots of valuable points.  They have the 3rd best short dance, 7th best free dance, and 5th best overall scores.  They need a gold medal to guarantee a spot in the Final, while a silver medal will keep them in contention.

Khudaiberdieva and Nazarov won a bronze medal at JGP Australia.  They earned a Level 4 on both segments of their Cha Cha in the short dance as well as on their twizzles and lift, while the non touching step sequence received a Level 3.  They had all positive GOEs, but they were small, only netting them 2 points, and their program components were in the 6s.  Their free dance earned Level 4 for their twizzles and one lift, with a Level 3 on the other lift, spin, and step sequence.  They earned all positive GOEs and again had program components in the 6 range.  They also lost a point due to a fall, but it was not as costly because it did not occur during an element.  They have the 10th best short dance and 9th best overall scores.  They need a gold medal to earn a spot in the Final.

The Greens earned a bronze medal in their JGP debut in Latvia.  They received a Level 3 and a Level 4 on the Cha Cha in their short dance and a Level 4 on their lift.  They earned a negative GOE on their twizzles, which were also graded Level 2.  They had program components in the 6 range.  Their free dance earned a Level 4 on their twizzles, lifts, and spin, but they only earned Level 2 on their step sequence.  They had all positive GOEs but they were very minor.  Again, they had program components in the 6s.  They need a gold medal to earn their first trip to the Junior Grand Prix Final.

2017 JGP Poland Ladies Preview

Alexandra Trusova and Anastasia Tarakanova have secured their spots in the Junior Grand Prix Final with 30 and 26 points respectively.  Mako Yamashita sits third with 24 points and will have to await the outcome of the next two weeks.  There are three ladies still in contention for the Final, while there are several who are competing in their first and only event and could play spoiler.

Daria Panenkova won gold in her JGP debut in Latvia.  Her short program combination is a triple flip + triple toe and all of her jumps are in the bonus.  She earned all positive GOEs, but her program components were all in the 6s.  Her free skate is packed, with every single jump in the bonus.  She only landed one triple + triple combination and had one fall.  She only received a negative GOE on the triple loop which she fell on, but having every jump in the bonus gives her a big technical boost.  She earned Level 4 on all of her spins, but she lost a little ground with a time violation and her program components could be brought up.  She needs a gold, silver, or bronze medal to qualify for the Junior Grand Prix Final, while a 4th place finish would keep her in the running.  She has the 3rd best short program, 8th best free skate, and 5th best overall scores.

Eunsoo Lim won a silver medal at JGP Austria.  Her short program is a triple flip + triple toe and she has two jumps in the bonus.  She completed her short program with all positive GOEs and had some program components in the 7 range.  Her free skate had one triple + triple combination.  She earned an impressive Level 4 on her step sequence, but only a Level 3 on two of her spins.  She earned positive GOEs on everything except for a double axel and her program components were even higher than in her short program, with all but one in the 7 range.  She needs a gold medal to guarantee her spot in the JGP Final, while a silver or bronze would keep her in the running.  She has the 5th best short program, 6th best free skate, and 4th best overall scores.

Emmy Ma won a bronze medal in her JGP debut in Latvia.  She did a triple flip + double toe for her combination there and will really need a triple + triple if she wants to stay competitive.  She did earn all positive GOES and while her program components averaged in the 6s she did receive several 7 marks.  Again, there was no triple + triple in her free skate and she only had three jumps in the bonus, two which were judged under-rotated.  Her program components were better with several averaging in the 7s overall.  She needs a gold medal to secure a spot in the Final, while a silver medal would keep her in contention.

Rino Kasakake won the gold medal at her international debut at Coupe de Printemps last season where she put up a strong score near the 170 point range.  She also had a strong 4th place finish at Japanese nationals as a junior last season.

Alena Kostornaia is making her international debut at this event.  While the Russian ladies field is notoriously deep, she finished just 16th as a junior.

Akari Matsubara is also making her international debut at this event.  She finished 7th as a Junior at Japanese nationals.

My podium predictions:

Gold: Daria Panenkova

Silver: Eunsoo Lim

Bronze: Rino Kasakake

2017 JGP Poland Pairs Preview

Five teams are looking to punch their tickets to the Junior Grand Prix Final in the last pairs event of the season.  Paniflova and Rylov lead the standings with 26 points, with Bokikova and Kozlovskii right behind them with 24 points.

Pavliuchenko and Khodykin earned the gold medal at JGP Belarus.  They earned Level 4 on everything but the twist and death spiral in their short program, but they earned positive GOEs on all of their elements.  Their free skate includes a triple toe + triple toe combination and a throw triple flip.  They only earned a slight negative GOE on their opening triple + triple.  They need a 1st-4th place finish to secure their place in the Final.  There are several scenarios where even a 5th place finish would earn them a trip.  They have the 5th best short program, best free skate, and best total scores.

Kostiukovich and Ialin won the gold medal in their JGP debut in Croatia.  Their short program earned Level 4 for everything except the death spiral, and they only earned a slight negative GOE on the side by side double lutzes.  Their free skate includes a quadruple twist which they completed with positive GOEs.  They also have an extremely difficult side by side combo planned with a triple salchow + single loop + triple salchow combination, although it was deemed under-rotated in places and they had a fall on the element.  They earned a Level 4 on everything but the twist, which earned Level 3.  They can finish as low as 4th place and still earn a trip to the Final.  While their content gives them a huge advantage, their program components suffered slightly and they only finished 3rd in that area in Croatia.  Like their teammates, a 5th place finish could also secure them a spot in the Final under the right circumstances.  They have the 3rd best short program, 2nd best free skate, and 2nd best total scores.

Poluianova and Sopot earned a silver medal in Belarus.  Their short program earned Level 4 on everything but the triple twist.  Their free skate was mostly clean with only slightly negative GOEs on the side by side jumps.  They could afford to upgrade their side by side jumps by replacing their double axels with a triple.  They need a medal of any color to qualify for the Final.  They have the 4th best short program, 3rd best free skate, and 5th best total scores.

Gao and Xie won the silver medal, their first career JGP medal, last week in Croatia.  They earned Level 4 on all of their elements in the short program and received positive GOEs on everything except for the side by side double lutz.  Their free skate was overall fairly clean with the only error being a negative GOE on their side by side triple salchow.  They earned Level 4 on everything but the death spiral which earned a Level 3.  Their biggest technical issue is their side by side combination jump, as they only had a double toe + double toe.  They can earn a trip to the Final with a medal of any color.  They have the 2nd best short program, 4th best free skate, and 3rd best total scores.

Alexandrovskaya and Windsor had a disappointing start to their JGP season.  Their short program in Latvia had several Level 3 elements and they even earned a negative GOE on their step sequence.  Their free skate had issues as well with problems on both of their side by side jumps and they received no credit for their pairs spin.  However, they have had more success as seniors, winning the bronze medal last week at Nebelhorn Trophy with personal best scores and qualifying for the Olympics.  While their scores there were much higher than any junior has set this season, the short program has very different elements than what they competed in Nebelhorn and there are more elements in a senior free skate.  They won’t have had much time to adjust back to their junior level programs and there are less technical points on the table. They need a gold medal to guarantee themselves a spot in the Final.  They have the 7th best short program, 9th best free skate, and 8th best total scores.

Lu and Mitrofonav have an outside chance of qualifying for the Final if they win a gold medal here after a career best 5th place finish in Belarus.  Their biggest technical upgrade would be in their levels, as they only earned a Level 2 on their steps and death spiral in the short program and a Level 1 on their twist.  They also had program components in the 5s.  Their free skate had four falls, on all of the jumps in the program.  They have the 9th best short program score.

Silver: Alexandrovskaya/Windsor

Bronze: Pavliuchenko/Khodykin

2017 JGP Poland Men’s Preview

Four men are still in the running for the Junior Grand Prix Final, while one is making his season debut, hoping he can secure his spot in front of the home crowd next week.  Alexei Krasnozhon has already secured his spot in the Final, with 30 points overall.  Mitsuki Sumoto and Makar Ignatov each have 24 points while Roman Savosin and Joseph Phan have 22.

This event also promises lots of quads, and it is likely that we’ll see all the medalists over the 200 point mark.

Alexey Erokhov has set the bar this season, and no one has come close to matching it.  He took home the gold medal from JGP Belarus.  His short program includes a triple flip + triple toe combination with two jumps in the bonus.  He earned all positive GOEs, but he did have one spin that earned Level 2.  His program components all averaged 7s or high 6s.  His free skate included two quads, the salchow and the toe, both which he received full credit for and stood up on.  He even received positive GOEs on the quad salchow.  After GOEs were taken into account, these two elements netted him almost 21 points.  He also has a third quad (toe) in the bonus that he did land, but received less credit because it was not completed in combination.  In addition to the quads, he has two triple + triple combinations.  Two of his spins only earned Level 3, and his program components slightly suffered compared to the short program, so there is still room to grow with this program.  He needs a medal of any color to guarantee a spot in the Junior Grand Prix Final, while a 4th place finish would keep him in the running.  He has the best short program, free skate, and total scores for the season.

Camden Pulkinen won his first career JGP medal, a gold, at JGP Austria.  His short program combination is a triple flip + triple toe and he only has one jump in the bonus.  He had two falls in his program, including on the combination jump.  His free skate does not have a quad, but he has two triple + triple combinations and two triple axels.  He has five jumping passes planned in the bonus.  He could bring his levels up more by upgrading all of his spins to Level 4 and the step sequence to at least a Level 3.  He also had fairly strong program components for this level, with everything in the 6 range, and some individual judges giving him marks as high as 7.50.  He needs to win a medal here to qualify for the Final, but he could stay in the mix with a 4th place finish.  He has the 10th best short program, 4th best free skate, and 4th best total scores.

Luc Economides also won his first JGP medal, a silver, in Austria.  His short program combination is a triple flip + triple toe.  He had one fall on his opening triple axel, but the rest of the program earned positive GOEs.  His free skate at that event was a bit messier, with singled jumps, invalid jumps, and a fall.  He has five jumping passes in the bonus, but had errors on two of them.  He does not have a quad, and did not land a clean triple + triple combination in his program in Austria.  He also had two spins that received Level 2.  He needs a gold or silver medal to qualify for the Final.  He has the 9th best total score.

Igor Efimchuk won a bronze medal at JGP Belarus.  His short program includes a triple loop + triple toe and he has two jumps in the bonus.  He only earned a slight negative GOE on one of his spins.  He fell on his opening quad toe in the free skate and both of his triple axels earned negative GOEs.  He also popped both of his lutzes, one into a single and one into a double.  He only has four jumping passes in the bonus, so he needs to make them all count.  He needs a gold medal to qualify for the Final.  He has the 2nd best short program and 8th best total scores.

Koshiro Shimada is out of the running for the Final after a 5th place finish last week in Croatia.  He only executed a double axel in his short program, and he earned negative GOEs on one of his spin combinations.  His program components were on the lower side, with transitions averaging in the 5 range.  He only has a double axel in his free skate and only one triple + triple combination.  However, he earned all positive GOEs, and had all Level 4 spins and steps.

Yan Hao made his JGP debut last week in Croatia, where he finished 8th overall.  He fell on the triple axel and the triple toe + triple toe combination in his short program and only did a double lutz.  While his program components averaged in the 5 range, he did receive 7 marks from some of the judges.  While he has a bit more difficult technical content than Shimada, his program was on the messier side and his program components were lower.

Jiri Belohradsky cannot qualify for the Final after a 6th place finish in a deep field at JGP Belarus.  However, he does have a shot at a medal here, with a strong performance.  His free skate does not have any particularly difficult content, and several jumps could be upgraded to triples, however, he can skate it very cleanly.  He only received a negative GOE on his final jumping pass, the double axel, and it was very minor.  While he is working on upgrading the difficulty, he could gain higher results this season with improved artistic scores, as his scores were all in the low 6 range, with some marks as low as 5.50.  His combination in the short program is a triple flip + triple toe and he has one jumping pass in the bonus.

Matteo Rizzo is making his JGP season debut.  If he medals here, he has a chance to qualify for the Final next week in Italy.  He has competed on the Junior Grand Prix since 2013, but his highest finish was 5th back in 2015.  He has had a great start to his senior season, however.  He set a personal best score of 227.02 at Lombardia Trophy where he finished 5th overall.  And just last weekend, he placed 4th at Nebelhorn Trophy, earning a spot at the Olympics.

Gold: Alexey Erokhov

Silver: Matteo Rizzo

Bronze: Camden Pulkinen
