2016 JGP Estonia Pairs Preview

Of all the events at this Junior Grand Prix, this is the most unpredictable and the hardest to determine Junior Grand Prix Final qualification scenarios.  Seven teams are making their season debut here and will compete again next week in Germany.

Atakahova and Spiridonov won silver at JGP Czech Republic.  They have some impressive technical content in their free skate, including a side by side triple toe + double toe + double toe combination.  They need a gold medal to guarantee their spot in the Final.  They have the 4th short program, 2nd best free skate and 3rd best total scores.

Borisova and Sopot won bronze at JGP Russia.  They struggled with both their side by side jumps in the free skate, doubling one and singling and falling on the other.  They need a gold medal to give themselves a chance to qualify for the Final.  They have the 5th best short program, 4th best free skate and 5th best total scores.

Liu and Johnson won bronze at JGP Czech Republic, although there was a sizable gap between them and Atakhanova and Spiridonov.  They did set a new personal best free skate score at that event, despite having two falls and receiving negative GOEs on five of the elements.  They need a gold medal to give themselves a strong chance of qualifying for the Final.  They have the 7th best short program, 5th best free skate and 6th best total scores.

Oganesian and Bardei placed 4th at Junior Worlds last year and qualified for the Junior Grand Prix Final.  They have competed two seasons on the Junior Grand Prix and won three medals.  If they medal here, they’ll have a chance to qualify for the Final next week in Germany.

Ustimkina and Volodin have only competed in one Junior Grand Prix event, placing 5th last season in Latvia.  They are the reigning Youth Olympic Games bronze medalist.  They also have a chance to qualify for the Final next week in Germany if they can medal here.

My podium predictions:

Gold: Borisova/Sopot

Silver: Atakhanova/Spiridonov

Bronze: Oganesian/Bardei

2016 JGP Estonia Dance Preview

Loboda and Drozd won gold at JGP Russia, setting new personal bests across the board.  Their free dance was especially strong, receiving Level 4 on all of their elements except for the step sequences, which received Level 3.  They also earned all positive GOEs and had program components in the 8s.  They need a gold or silver medal to qualify for the Final while a bronze would keep them in contention.  They have the 3rd best short dance, best free dance and best total scores.

Skoptcova and Aleshin won bronze last week at JGP Slovenia.  They also received Level 4 on all of their elements in the free dance except for the step sequence, which received Level 3s, however their program components were much lower, in the 6s and 7s.  They need a gold medal to give themselves a chance to qualify for the Final.  They have the 9th best short dance, 9th best free dance and 8th best total scores.

Whitley and Graham finished 5th at JGP Czech Republic, setting new personal bests across the board.  They received Level 2 on the step sequences in their free dance with program components in the 6s.

Wagret and Couyras placed 5th at JGP Russia with new personal bests across the board.  They had Level 2 on both step sequences in their free dance along with a Level 3 on one lift with program components in the low 6s.

Lewis and Bye placed 6th, just behind Whitley and Graham, at JGP Czech Republic.  They set new personal bests in the short dance and total score.  They had Level 1 on the twizzles in their free dance and Level 2 and Level 3 on their step sequences, one with a negative GOE with program components in the high 6s.

2016 JGP Estonia Ladies Preview

Polina Tsurskaya won gold at JGP Russia where she set a new personal best short program.  Her free skate had some problems, including a singled axel.  She has a strong first combination of triple lutz + triple toe + double toe, but she doubled the first jump in Russia.  She needs a gold or silver medal to guarantee her spot in the Final, while a silver medal would give her a strong chance to qualify.  She has the best short program, 9th best free skate and 6th best total scores.

Rin Nitaya won the bronze medal at JGP France where she set new personal bests across the board.  She had two double axel + triple toe combinations in the bonus at that event, but had a popped axel that received no credit.  She needs a gold medal to give herself a chance to qualify for the Final.  She has the 9th best short program, 10th best free skate and 10th best total scores.

Mako Yamashita won a bronze medal at JGP Japan in her debut.  Her triple lutz + triple toe in her free skate was downgraded but she does have a double axel + triple toe + double toe in the bonus.  She needs a gold medal to keep herself in contention for the Final.  She has the 5th best short program and 7th best total scores.

Elizaveta Nugumanova won bronze in her debut at JGP Russia.  Her free skate has a triple loop + triple loop and a double axel + triple toe + double toe in the bonus.  Like Yamashita and Nitaya, she needs a gold medal to keep herself in the running for the Final.  She has the 8th best free skate score.

Tessa Hong placed 6th in her international debut at JGP Spain last season.  She’s struggled with injuries over the years which has kept her from being able to compete at US Nationals, but she’s continued to skate well enough to earn another JGP assignment this year.  While her score in Spain last year, likely isn’t enough to keep up with the Russians and Japanese, it should give her a chance of scoring in the top six here.

My podium predictions:

Gold: Polina Tsurskaya

Silver: Mako Yamashita

Bronze: Rin Nitaya

2016 JGP Estonia Men’s Preview

Alexander Samarin already took a gold home from JGP Russia where he set new personal bests in the free skate and total scores.  He needs a gold, silver or bronze medal to qualify for the Final.  His free skate content is impressive including a quad toe, two triple axels, and a triple lutz + half loop + triple flip in the bonus.  He has the 6th best short program, 3rd best free skate and 3rd best total scores.

Vincent Zhou had a strong free program at JGP Japan but had some problems in his free skate and walked away with the silver medal.  He set new personal bests across the board at that event.  He needs gold medal to guarantee a spot in the Final while a silver would keep him in contention.  His quad salchow in the free skate was under-rotated, plus he under-rotated another jump and had a very messy double axel.  He has the best short program, 5th best free skate and 4th best total scores.

Koshiro Shimada last competed in the first event of the season, JGP France, where he won the bronze medal.  He set new personal bests in the free skate and total score at that event.  He needs a gold medal to qualify for the Final.  He does not have a quad or a triple axel and he is at a technical disadvantage.  He does not have a top 10 score this season and has not broken the 200 point mark.

Petr Gumennik placed 4th in his debut at JGP Russia.  He needs a gold medal to keep himself in the conversation for the Final and without a quad or triple axel, it will be difficult for him to do so.

Roman Sadovsky placed 5th at his first event in Japan where he set new personal bests in the free skate and total scores.  Unfortunately, that was a very strong event and he scored over 200 points, better than many of the medalists this season.  Even with a gold medal it is unlikely he can qualify for the Final.  He has a quad salchow and a triple axel, although he under-rotated it in Japan.  He has the 7th best free skate and 8th best total scores.

My podium predictions:

Gold: Alexander Samarin

Silver: Vincent Zhou

Bronze: Roman Sadovsky
