JGP Italy Recap

Men
Han Yan increased his score by 14 points in one week and earned his second gold medal and a spot in the Junior Grand Prix Final.  Jason Brown took home the silver medal and also secured a spot in the Final.  June-Hyoung Lee took home his 1st medal, a bronze.

Some skaters had weaker performances here, than earlier this season.  Artur Dmitriev botched the jumps in his short program and finished 23 points less than Poland and will likely not make the Final.  Maurizio Zandron finished 12 points less than in Austria and Yoji Tsuboi finished 13 points below his score in Latvia.

Filippo Ambrosini improved his score by 24 points since Poland and Luiz Manella improved his personal best by 40 points in his season debut.

Ladies
Julia Lipnitskaia set a record for her score on route to her second gold medal of the season and a trip to the Junior Grand Prix Final as the top seeded skater.  She also increased her score by 11 points since Poland.  Her teammate Anna Shershak took home the silver medal in her international debut.  Hannah Miller, also making her international debut, won the bronze.

Anita Madsen finished 12 points higher than in Australia and climbed from 17th in the short to 8th overall.  So Youn Park increased her score by 13 points since Austria.  Isadora Williams had the biggest improvement of the ladies event, increasing her personal best by 21 points in her season debut.

Satoko Miyahara finished 19 points below the mark she set in Poland where she won the silver medal.  Micol Cristini finished 13 points less than Romania.  Isabelle Olsson finished 12 points below her personal best in her season debut and Sandy Hoffman finished 22 points below her personal best.  Courtney Hicks withdrew after sustaining an injury during her free skate.

Dance
Stepanova and Bukin won their second gold medal of the season and claimed their spot in the Final.  They closed the gap between themselves and their teammates Sinitsina and Zhiganshin and the race for gold in the Final should be very close.  Zenkova and Sinitsin increased their score by 15 points since Romania to capture the silver medal and Bonacorsi and Mager took home the bronze.

Tessari and Colafato finished 12 points below their score in Poland.  Yermak and Liubchenko finished 19 points above their personal best in their season debut.

JGP Italy Dance Preview

This promises to be a good event with several teams in contention for the podium.  Stepanova and Bukin of Russia already have a gold medal from Romania.  If they finish on the podium, they’ll earn a spot in the JGP Final.  Their score in Romania is the highest in this field by a comfortable margin, so they should not have a problem repeating their gold medal performance here.

Bonacorsi and Mager of the United States took home the silver medal in Australia.  Last weekend, Orford and Williams, who won gold in Australia, showed that their scores didn’t hold up in a larger field.  Bonacorsi and Mager will have to improve on their performance if they hope to make the medal stand again at this event.  They’ll need a gold medal to guarantee a spot in the Final while a silver or bronze might land them in a tiebreaker.

Koch and Nuchtern of Germany finished just off the podium last weekend in Austria.  They have a real shot at climbing the ranks here and nabbing their first JGP medal if they can maintain their performance level and not burn out from two back to back competitions.

Zenkova and Sinitsin of Russia have a bronze medal from Australia.  If they want to make the Final, they’ll need a gold medal.  A silver would put them in a possible tiebreaker.

Also in the mix are Hasegawa and Hawegawa of Canada.  They can’t qualify no matter what the result here, and that lack of pressure could give them the extra edge to capture their first medal.

My podium predictions:
Gold: Stepanova/Bukin
Silver: Koch/Nuchtern
Bronze: Bonacorsi/Mager

JGP Italy Men’s Preview

Han Yan of China won the gold medal last weekend at JGP Austria setting the top score so far this season with a quad in his free skate.  He has the goods to deliver a winning performance again this week, but he’s been sick and is competing three weeks in a row.  It will be tough to keep the energy up, but he only needs a podium finish to qualify for the JGP Final.  A 4th place finish would set him up for a possible tiebreaker.

Jason Brown of the United States has one gold medal already this season.  He doesn’t have a triple axel, and usually his solid PCS scores and fluid presentation can make up for this deficit, but with Yan delivering triple axels and quads, it will be more difficult at this event.  He needs a podium finish to qualify for the Final.

Artur Dmitriev of Russia also has a silver medal and one of the top scores of this season.  He bested Joshua Farris in the free skate in Poland, so if he can bring up his short program score he has a real shot at a second silver medal here.  He needs a gold or silver to qualify for the Final.

These three men are a head above the rest of the field and should not have a problem making the podium even with mistakes.  The real fight will be to see who gets the top slot and guarantees themselves a spot in the JGP Final.

My podium predictions:
Gold: Han Yan
Silver: Artur Dmitriev
Bronze: Jason Brown
