Skate America Free Dance

Group 1

Paradis/Ouellette, CAN: 45.50 TES + 39.69 PCS = 85.19  Total: 137.30

  • Great entrance to their stationary lift with her in a nice stag position
  • Good unison on their twizzles and nice speed
  • They seem to be skating with a lot more speed and commitment to their program today
  • Spread eagle curve lift with her arched over the ice
  • Nice stretch and matching leg line in their first step sequence with nice flow and edge changes
  • Nice positions in the dance spin with good flexibility from her and speed maintained throughout
  • Nice changes of hold in the second step sequence but I feel like her free arm gets in the way in places and doesn’t enhance the movement and she is slightly hunched in places
  • Fast rotational lift but I didn’t find the positions to be used effectively or to be visually appealing
  • Nice choreographic spinning movement with her arched over the ice that compliments the music and the feel of the program
  • I was very impressed with this team and really enjoyed the program

Guignard/Fabbri, ITA: 41.28 TES + 42.04 PCS -2.00 = 81.32 Total: 135.50 and into 2nd place

  • I’m bothered by her costume–it’s almost scandalous Halloween costume short and Irish dancers don’t wear tutus
  • Too many position changes in their opening lift and you never got to see one position reach it’s potential and appreciate it
  • Better twizzles today with two sets of crossings
  • They seem very uncertain and bobbly getting into their step sequence
  • She needs much more stretch through her free leg throughout the program
  • Nie pictures in their dance spin but not a lot of speed and slow change of foot
  • Nice tempo change for their 2nd step sequence but I’d like to see more toe point and use of her free arm to complement the steps
  • Bent legs into their straight line lift and no speed
  • They’re really having trouble on some of these transition elements and are really heavy into the ice
  • They don’t seem to have enough energy to really bring out the portrayal of this Riverdance program

Orford/Williams, CAN: 36.20 TES + 38.58 PCS -1.00 = 73.78  Total: 128.88 and into 3rd place

  • I like that their first step sequence happens organically and blends seamlessly into the choreography and into the music
  • Nice curve lift showing a lot of strength
  • She could have a little more arch in her back in the rotational lift to have a better picture but nice speed
  • He falls in their second step sequence
  • Good attitude twizzles and he drifts away from her int he 2nd twizzle sequence
  • Nice pictures and speed in their dance spin but I didn’t like the force of the exit as it didn’t suit the music
  • Really nice arabesque one legged straight leg lift timed well with the music
  • She really connects with this music but I’d like to see her connect with him more

Cannuscio/McManus, USA: 39.17 TES + 41.30 PCS = 80.47  Total: 135.61 and into 2nd place

  • Great deep edges in the first step sequence but a little off in a few places on their unison; I didn’t think that the step sequence carried the character of the program
  • Nice positions in the first lift
  • A little tugging while changing positions in the dance spin and losing speed
  • Nice twist around his back to a handstand on his foot with good speed
  • I really like the expression and connection to the music in this second step sequence as well as the weaving of the individual with separate elements
  • Rotational lift is the same as they’ve done for years and I’d like to see something else
  • Crossing outstretched twizzles were really nice but she bobbled the second set
  • Really cool spinning movement with her doing fan kicks arched back and perfectly timed with the music
  • I didn’t really see the theme of the creepy couple and if it wasn’t for the costumes and makeup it would just seem like a more lyrical program

Group 2

Testa/Csolley, SVK: 37.09 TES + 40.00 PCS -1.00 = 76.09 Total: 131.72 and into 4th place

  • Good deep edges with nice use of her free arms in their first step sequence
  • Good musical interpretation with their first lift rolling up and then down to a hydroblade
  • straight leg twizzles timed very well to the music but they seem a little slow and labored
  • On-ice costume change
  • Good flexibility in the spins but not a lot of connection to the program and slow
  • Bobble in the step sequence and then she falls
  • A little bit of difficulty in the transition out of their straight-line lift
  • Rotational lift with a lot of strength as he is holding with one arm and her legs are perpendicular to the ice
  • This program seemed to lose it’s way halfway through

Stepanova/Bukin, RUS: 42.14 TES + 46.36 PCS -1.00 = 87.50 Total: 143.87 and into 1st place

  • I like her modern, minimalist dress with just a hint of ombre
  • Nice picture in the dance spin with them wrapped around each other and nice use of the free arms and good speed throughout
  • Interesting steps into a split rotational spin with good connection between them
  • Sit spin twizzles from yesterday with good unison through all three sets
  • Good flow, changes of edge and ease in the changes of hold in the first step sequence
  • A lot of positions in the lift ending with a nice flip on to his skate and they did a nice job of making good pictures in each position
  • Losing some speed and flow in their second step sequence but really nice choreography and edge work
  • I’d like to see her supporting leg stretched in the straight line lift with her standing on his foot
  • Really captivating program and it felt like watching a dance routine

Shibutani/Shibutani, USA: 46.24 TES + 49.95 PCS = 96.19 Total: 160.33 and into 1st place

  • Her posture is so gorgeous
  • Really nice straight line lift with him on one foot with her in a forward stag
  • Split rotational lift with one arm up a la Meryl Davis
  • Gorgeous lines from her in the first step sequence with hie matching leg lines and ease in the change of holds; nice free arms from her
  • Good speed in the dance spin with good pictures
  • Interesting rotational entry to the curve lift
  • Her fingers are absolutely gorgeous and finish off the movement perfectly
  • Picking up speed in their twizzles and perfectly timed and executed very well
  • Really lovely floating second step sequence with good expression and they’re getting the audience behind them
  • Split spinning choreographic moment at the end
  • That was classic Marina Zoueva choreography that they executed brilliantly and they’ll do very well with it

Chock/Bates, USA: 50.21 TES + 51.86 PCS = 102.07 Total: 171.03 and into 1st place

  • Great speed into their first lift
  • Great curve lift with her pressed up as high is allowed in dance and a flip exit; only thing I didn’t like was the telegraphing leading up to it
  • Twizzles were a bit slow but cleanly done
  • Great choreography to the music in the first step sequence making use of all the nuances and creating a big pattern; they have such an ease together on the ice and it shows in their holds
  • Nice pictures in the dance spin with a nice rotational exit
  • Lasso around to his back and I love how she changes position from the back to the front effortlessly with him skating backwards on one leg
  • Nitpicky but I’m not loving how her hair is in her face this whole program
  • Solid second step sequence but she bobbles coming out of it and saves herself from falling
  • Rotational lift that with her around his neck
  • Struggle through the final spinning step sequence and it seemed very heavy and difficult but it will be a showstopper when they get it down
