2014 Skate America Short Dance

Group 1

Paradis/Ouellette, CAN: 28.26 TES + 23.85 PCS = 52.11 and into 1st place

  • I like the length and flow of her skirt and her use in the beginning to echo the paso doble theme of the woman as a cape
  • Solid twizzles, a little slow and moving a little away from each other
  • Good use of her free arm in the paso section but they could have more stretch and power through their lines
  • Some of her arm positions holding the skirt are awkward as they cause her to hunch forward
  • Slow and a little wobbly in their non touching step sequence
  • They have a lot of choreography that plays into the Spanish theme but are not giving as much in their performance as they could
  • Nice rotational lift with good speed and a change of position.

Cannuscio/McManus, USA: 30.04 TES + 25.10 PCS = 55.14 and into 1st place

  • She is working her skirt in this opening section and they have the Latin smolder down
  • Good speed in their paso double with good use of free arms and her skirt and nice accents in the music
  • Losing a little bit of speed and flow across the ice at the end of their paso sequence
  • Rotational catch foot lift with good speed but nothing different or unique
  • Losing a little bit of the performance element here through the middle section
  • Interesting straight leg twizzles in opposite directions but not completely in unison
  • A little off in places in their non touching step sequence but some good edge work and nice flow across the ice
  • This style fits her more than him but they both did a good job with the interpretation

Testa/Csolley, SVK: 30.23 TES + 25.40 PCS = 55.63 and into 1st

  • Her dress reminds me of what Anna Cappellini wore last year for Carmen
  • A little bouncy and up on their opening choreography
  • Nice twizzle sequence with interesting free legs
  • Great lift with him twisting her up and dropping to his skate and finishing in a curve pattern
  • I like the intensity that he is showing in this paso sequence but her hands are too stiff
  • Nice speed but not enough stretch through their free legs in the paso step sequence
  • They need to be down in their knees more with more stretch through their free leg in the non touching step sequence
  • There was a lot to like about this program but I don’t think there was enough Spanish specific choreography

Stepanova/Bukin, RUS: 26.88 TES + 29.49 PCS = 56.37 and into 1st place

  • After a really tough fall in practice today it’s nice to see them able to compete here
  • Flip over and around to a nice curve lift with him in spread eagle and great flexibility from her
  • Amazing twizzles in a nearly sit spin position with good unison between them
  • Their immaturity is showing in the paso sequence as a lot was done in hold with no use of the free arm and the places she does use the free arm are very standard and stiff
  • The non touching step sequence doesn’t seem to go with their music but that’s a bit more of a choreography issue
  • A little slow and close to the boards at the end of the sequence
  • They didn’t have quite the performance element of the more senior teams but they are still very young and this was a very solid program

Group 2

Guignard/Fabbri, ITA: 25.63 TES + 28.55 PCS = 54.18 and into 4th place

  • I’m finding her costume very distracting with the shawl piece flying up and down
  • He puts his foot down on their first twizzle so they’ll lose some levels
  • Really like the character and the interaction between them in the non touching step sequence but she has a bobble halfway through
  • Nice speed in the paso with good stretched legs but it looks like they’re fighting each other in the hold
  • Handstand up to a rotational lift with her legs draped over his shoulder–not the most attractive position and I’m not sure if that was what the lift was intended to be

Orford/Williams, CAN: 28.39 TES + 26.71 PCS = 55.10 and into 4th place

  • Nice back attitude twizzles with good speed but a little far apart
  • Good facial expressions from them in the paso section with good use of her free arm
  • A few places in this paso sequence where their leg lines do not match
  • Good unison and distance between them on the non touching step sequence
  • Flip up to a rotational lift in an arched position, nicely done but nothing unique

Shibutani/Shibutani, USA: 31.59 TES + 32.55 PCS = 64.14 and into 1st place

  • Great opening picture and their attitude and facial expressions are spot on
  • Off on the unison on their twizzles and she puts her foot down in the 2nd set but the third set were great
  • Great lines in the non touching step sequence and great placement of their arms
  • Nice edges and great quality overall
  • Picking up speed into the Paso section with nice matching leg lines and ease in the changes of hold
  • Reverse lasso rotational lift to a stag position
  • Overall a very solid technical program with good execution of the Spanish attitude

Chock/Bates, USA: 35.39 TES + 33.57 PCS = 68.96 and into 1st place

  • Great lift with a straight line spread eagle and the change of positions and arms from her are right on the music
  • A little wobble from her on the twizzles but good unison and position between them
  • A nice transitional move with her swiveling down to the ice that is common in ballroom paso routines
  • Very nice matching leg lines in the Paso with good speed and full use of the ice surface
  • They don’t seem to have the same fire that the Shibutanis have in their facial expressions and are going for a more big smile approach
  • Great choreography throughout this program and seamless weaving of the elements with the transitional movements
  • Nice unison and edges in the non touching step sequence using all the ice surface
  • Very solid routine, great choreography
