Bautista perseveres to earn her place in Kansas City

Photo Credit: KR Photographs Dress by Gail Johnson

Maxine Bautista made a big splash on the national scene when she won the Juvenile Silver medal in 2013.

She followed that up with an Intermediate Silver medal in 2015 and is competing as a junior for the first time in Kansas City.  She won the silver medal at Upper Great Lakes Regionals and the pewter at Midwestern Sectionals to qualify for nationals.

She is now 15 and represents the DuPage Figure Skating Club, training near her hometown in the Chicago suburbs.  She has made it through some difficult setbacks, including failing to qualify for nationals last season, but has come out stronger on the other side.

How did you get involved with skating?

My parents wanted me to get involved in different activities because I was so shy.  I started with dancing,  then swimming, until I saw this flyer from a nearby rink.  I told my parents I want to try it and that’s how I got involved.

How would you describe yourself as a skater?

As a skater, I think I’m graceful and elegant.

Tell me about yourself outside of skating.

Outside of skating, I’m a typical teenager.  I do my homework during breaks from practices, go out with friends for movies, eat out, and attend parties. My other hobbies are coloring/painting and making origami.

Tell me about your programs this season.

My short program is called Caravan.  It’s fun and jazzy.  My long program is called Clouds, the Mind on the Re(Wind) and Rain in Your Black Eyes.  It is a modern one.

What is the most difficult element for you in your programs? What is your favorite element to complete?

The most difficult element for me is the triple lutz while my favorite element to do is the triple toe.

You had one of the strongest novice performances of the season last year at regionals, but struggled at sectionals and didn’t qualify for nationals.  What did you learn from that experience?

I learned that my skating journey did not stop there.  It was a difficult experience but life has to go on.

You had to come from behind at sectionals this year to qualify for nationals.  Do you prefer to be the front runner or the underdog?

I prefer to be the underdog because it is less pressure.

You’ve won two national medals, one at the juvenile level and one at the intermediate level.  How were those experiences different?  What did you take away from both of those successes?

The experiences were different.  When I was in juvenile, it was the first time USFSA adapted the juveniles going to sectionals then nationals. I was young and having fun.  I did not feel any pressure yet.  During my intermediate nationals, I was 7th in the short program and skated a clean long program to claim the 2nd place spot.  I achieved these successes by determination, not giving up, and enjoying what I love to do.

What has been the biggest difference preparing to compete as a junior this season?

The biggest difference preparing to compete as a junior this season is skating more maturely and incorporating harder elements.

Have you made any changes to your programs for nationals?

I did not make any major changes in my programs.

What are your goals for nationals? For next season?

My goals for nationals are to be able to deliver my programs the way I am capable and the best that I could possibly do. For next season, I hope to be more consistent in executing all my triple jumps and combination jumps.

Is there anything else you want people to know?

I used to do dance/ballet and perform in the Nutcracker.  My favorite part to play was Chinese.

Group 1

Ashley Lin: 61.88 Total: 90.81

  • She has nice timing and musicality along with personality at the top of her program
  • Nice solid triple toe
  • Good height on the double salchow but a little too close to the boards and she had to put her hand down
  • Nice layback position and picking up speed through the Biellman
  • Very solid double axel with nice ride out
  • Triple toe + double toe (a little tight on the second jump)
  • She has good speed and a nice light quality in her arms
  • Double axel + single toe + single loop
  • Double flip + double loop
  • I really like the spring in her jumps and she gets great height
  • Nice final spin

Cheyenne King: 56.61 Total: 85.94 and into 2nd place

  • Single axel with one arm variation
  • Nice speed on sit spin with good timing with the music

  • Great height on the triple toe
  • Good double axel

  • Double toe hand down + toe
  • Double axel pitched forward + toe
  • Double lutz
  • Double salchow + loop
  • She could have more stretch through her sit spin position
  • She has great lines but her jumps don’t get a lot of height and can be difficult to identify

Liza Hayes: 57.80 Total: 88.05 and into 2nd place

  • Double lutz
  • I love her facial expression in her step sequences and her use of her head and arms is really well done
  • single axel
  • Good speed on the sit spin
  • Double flip + half loop + double loop
  • Double lutz + double loop
  • Double salchow
  • Double flip + double toe

  • Great double axel + single toe with both arms up
  • Beautiful catch foot camel spin, picking up speed

  • Double axel flip out and hands down
  • Double lutz + single loop + double loop
  • Nice stretch through her final upright catch foot spin

Maxine Marie Bautista: 75.10 Total: 105.84 and into 1st place

  • Nice double loop with good ride out
  • Double flip with both arms up + double toe

  • Lovely positions on her combination spin
  • Double lutz with a good ride out of the jump
  • Really nice height on that double axel with a good landing position
  • Double flip + half loop + double axel
  • Her program seemed to get stronger toward the second half and she started to perform as well
  • Nice speed in her final spin with a good twisted position in the sit but losing speed in the tuck position

Lara Annuziata: 59.09 Total: 92.84 and into 2nd place

  • Double salchow
  • Good positions in her camel spin with speed maintained throughout and nice flexibility in her upright position
  • She took a weird skid stop into  her double axel + half loop + double loop but landed it
  • Double flip + double loop
  • Double axel with another weird skid stop before it
  • Double flip + double toe
  • Double lutz
  • Weird random fall on a transition step
  • She has a high kick into her lutz and not a lot of height on the jumps even though she has fast rotation
  • Her layback spin was really nice with good speed and a stretched Biellman
  • Her performance could be stronger as it looked like she was going from element to element with a lot of focus

Kassandra Carpentier: 72.04 Total: 112.24 and into 1st place

  • Double flip with hands on hips
  • Really nice double axel with good height
  • Good sit spin positions with nice speed
  • Double flip with hands on hips + double toe
  • Double axel + single loop + double loop
  • Triple salchow
  • Her jumps have so much height but some of her finishing touches could be worked on like softer arms and more stretch through her legs
  • Double lutz + double loop nicely done
  • Good speed on her final spin with nice positions
  • She had a 5 point lead after the short program and that was a clean skate so she’s going to be tough to catch

Gia Kokotakis: 63.50 Total: 99.43 and into 3rd place

  • Double flip with one arm over the head
  • Single axel
  • Really nice positions in her camel spin with good flexibility and nice speed
  • Double lutz + double toe
  • Double salchow with arms up + single axel sequence
  • Double flip + double loop + double loop
  • Double lutz with one arm up
  • She has great lines and a ton of emotion on the ice and her choreographic details look genuine and not like they were placed in there
  • She had a gorgeous unique position in her layback spin
  • I don’t think it will be enough to catch Carpentier, but that was a very solid program and I loved her skating

Ting Cui: 61.45 Total: 95.30 and into 4th place

  •  I love her criss-crossed rhinestone tights
  • Double axel + double toe
  • Triple salchow
  • Fall going into her choreographic step sequence, but it might have been before it started so it will be a 1 point deduction but shouldn’t effect levels
  • Single axel–looked like she popped it open a bit
  • Nice donut spin position into a catch foot in her camel spin
  • Double flip with arms up and double toe with hands on hips
  • Double lutz
  • Double lutz + single loop + double loop
  • Great positions in her final spin including a really nice illusion
  • There is so much to like about her but she seemed to lose a little bit of the spark after her fall
