2013 Trophee Eric Bompard Men’s Preview

Patrick Chan opened his season with a gold medal at home at Skate Canada.  He skated an exquisite short program but had a couple of errors in his free skate.  Although he hit two quads including one in combination with positive grades of execution but doubled and singled his triple axel attempts.  He still has one of the top total scores of the season and can improve by landing the triple axels.  He needs a medal of any color to guarantee a spot in the Final.

Yuzuru Hanyu finished behind Chan at Skate Canada after pulling up with a 2nd place free skate.  He fell on his opening quad salchow attempt but hit the quad toe in his free skate.  He had a few other mistakes at that event including a single axel + single toe combination and an under-rotated triple salchow later in his program.  His free skate was 20 points behind Chan’s and the bulk of the deficit was in the program components.  He needs a gold medal to guarantee a spot in the Final while a silver or bronze would keep him in the running.

Han Yan won gold at his Grand Prix debut at home at Cup of China.  He held on despite a 2nd place free skate at that event and hit a quad toe + triple toe along with a triple axel.  He had two minor errors including a doubled loop and not completing his triple flip sequence but he also doesn’t have as many points to play with to add to his program.  He needs a medal of any color to qualify for the Final.

Jason Brown surprised with a 2nd place showing in the short program at Skate America.  He has one of the top short program scores of the season despite not attempting a quad.  The triple axel is still not the most consistent jump in his repertoire and he had one downgraded in his free skate and only managed to add a single on to the 2nd.  He also received negative GOEs on those jumps.

Michal Brezina has a shot at qualifying for the Final with a gold medal performance here.
